Paceman Junaid Khan had figures of 3-81 while Mohammad Talha took 3-99. Spinner Saeed Ajmal finished with 2-120.

Sri Lanka lead the three-Test series 1-0 after winning the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets. The first Test ended as a draw in Abu Dhabi. (AFP)

In the first incident of firing, three people including Mufti Usman Yar, the secretary general of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Samiul Haq Group, were killed when unknown armed men opened fire on a car on Shahra-e-Faisal.

According to the police, four men traveling in the car were targeted by gunmen from both sides of the vehicle near Awami Markaz.

A hospital source said that the victims received bullet wounds on their chest.

In another incident, unknown gunmen shot dead three staffers of a private TV news channel. Sources said the Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) vehicle came under attack in Nazimabad.

"The van was parked close to Matric Board Office when motorcycle riding gunmen opened fire at it", sources added.

The shooters fled after riddling the van with bullets.

The attack left technician, Waqas, driver, Khalid, cameraman, Mehtab, and a guard seriously wounded.

The emergency responders quickly ambulanced the casualties to a hospital but the technician, the driver and the guard could not survive.

Indian MP Shashi Tharoor's wife found dead after Twitter affair row

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

NEW DELHI: The wife of prominent Indian minister Shashi Tharoor was found dead Friday in a five-star hotel room in New Delhi after she exposed his alleged adultery with a Pakistani journalist on Twitter.

The body was discovered by human resources minister Shashi Tharoor after he returned from a party meeting on Thursday, his private secretary Abhinav Kumar said.

"She seemed to be sleeping in a normal way but later it was found she was dead," Kumar told reporters, referring to Sunanda Pushkar, a 52-year-old entrepreneur formerly based in Dubai.

The death came as a tragic twist in a tale of apparent marital strife that has played out in full view of the public in India's newspapers and on social media.

It began late Wednesday when a curious series of messages appeared on the Twitter account of the suave thrice-married Tharoor, a former high-flying UN diplomat, novelist and key government spokesman.

They showed private exchanges purportedly between the 57-year-old minister (@shashitharoor) and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar (@mehrtarar), in which she professed her love for him and he said his wife had discovered their relationship.

Tharoor quickly responded by saying his Twitter account had been "hacked," but Pushkar spoke to two newspapers saying that she was the author of the messages.

"Our accounts have not been hacked and I have been sending out these tweets," Pushkar told the Economic Times in comments published Thursday.

She also raked up a corruption scandal related to the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament that almost wrecked Tharoor's career in 2010 and led him to resign from the cabinet.

Seeking to draw a line under the scandal, Tharoor issued a joint statement on Thursday in which he blamed unauthorised tweets and distorted media reports for the "unseemly controversy".

The statement said the couple, who wed in August 2010, were "happily married and intend to remain that way".

'No sign of foul play'

Kumar said there was "no sign of foul play" but police have opened a case and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

At the nine-storey Leela Palace hotel, where rooms start at about $300 a night, at least 200 journalists were locked outside the gates where an ambulance was parked.

Forensic experts and armed police could be seen entering the premises, with shocked guests of the hotel asked to use another entrance.

Cricket-loving Tharoor and his wife, the mother of an adult son from a former relationship, had been staying there since Thursday as work was being done to their New Delhi home, Kumar said.

"The cause of death and the time of death, we cannot say now," he added.

Pushkar, who had been suffering from tuberculosis, went on television on Thursday, appearing confused and apparently unaware she was talking live.

An anchor on the CNN-IBN channel, Sagarika Ghose, said Friday she had spoken privately to her earlier in the day and that she appeared depressed and was sobbing uncontrollably.

As well as tuberculosis, she had been suffering from lupus, a chronic immune disease, Ghose said.

The Pakistani journalist whom Pushkar accused of "stalking" her husband strongly denied having a relationship with the former UN diplomat.

Reacting to Pushkar's death, Tarar tweeted: "I just woke up and read this. I'm absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don't know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda."

Tharoor is a suave former diplomat who spent three decades in the United Nations and was beaten to the post of secretary general of the organisation by incumbent Ban Ki-moon.

The famed author and talented public speaker quit the UN after this defeat and entered Indian politics in 2008 as a ruling party MP from a safe seat in southern Kerala state.

Tharoor had to resign from his first ministerial post in 2010 after revelations that then-girlfriend Pushkar had been given a free stake in a new Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team.

Opposition parties said the stake, reportedly worth up to $15 million, was for Tharoor's behind-the-scenes services in putting together a consortium that bought a franchise in his home state of Kerala.

Tharoor, a father of two adult sons, resigned in 2010 saying that his conscience was clear, telling parliament he had done "nothing improper or unethical let alone illegal".

He is the most active user of Twitter in the government, with two million followers, and he has been instrumental in encouraging colleagues on to the platform.

Tharoor's son, Ishaan, a journalist at Time magazine, requested on Twitter "that everyone please respect our family's privacy at this moment". (AFP)

Two shot at Philadelphia school

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

Two teens, a boy and a girl, were shot in a gym at Delaware Valley Charter School in Philadelphia Friday.
The suspected shooter, a student at the school, later was taken into custody.
The two victims , both reportedly 15-year-old students, were each shot in the arm and taken to a hospital where police said they were in stable condition,
It was unclear if the shots came from inside or outside the building.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said the shooter was captured near his home but the gun has not been recovered. He said surveillance video showed a group of students hanging around when the shooting happened.
It was unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional but it "doesn't look like an active shooter type of situation," he said.
On Twitter, Philadelphia police wrote: ``Police have Delaware Valley Charter School shooter in custody'' and also said he was a student at the school, according to Reuters.
Earlier, police had tweeted, "SHOOTER - Turn yourself in. Get it over with now.''
The incident was the second school shooting this week.
A 12-year-old boy is accused of opening fire with a shotgun at a New Mexico school Tuesday and seriously wounding two students.

World Afghan Taliban 'confident of victory' over Nato troops

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

KABUL: Afghan Taliban said that they are "confident of victory" over Nato-led forces and already controls large areas of the country.

In an interview with BBC, the Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahed said that in remote parts it was "everywhere", and foreign troops were scared to leave their bases.

He also denied any ties with candidates in the "fake" presidential elections.

Mujahed said that historically Afghanistan had always defeated its occupiers. "We're sure they'll be defeated," he said.

He added that "vast swathes" of Helmand province, where UK troops are operating, were under Taliban control.

The spokesman also said that should the group return to power, it would not moderate the extreme methods of government and punishment it employed when last in charge, adding that the "Afghan people will again bring about an Islamic system according to their wishes".

Journalist incurs Musharraf lawyer's wrath

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

ISLAMABAD: Ahmed Raza Kasuri, one of the firebrand counsels of beleaguered former president, Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, Thursday assaulted a journalist with insults like 'Shame on you' and 'you are an Indian' only because the fumed lawyer had no answer to the question he was asked.

"You sound like an Indian journalist. Shame on you. Shame on you...You are one of the sold-outs. You practice envelope-journalism (manipulating news for money) ", said the wrathful juror outside the special court that is conducting the former dictator's treason trial.

Kasuri, who is famous for his courtroom theatrics, threw the tantrum after a local journalist shot a burning question at him.

"Your question makes you look like you are being paid by someone. You seem to be a paid person. Now we will have to deal with you as well.
You are undermining Pakistan’s commando general?" an enraged Kasuri said.

Jumping in to help Kasuri, Musharraf's supporters chorused "Shame on you".

The question asked by the Pakistani journalist was not audible but made Kasuri very angry.

He also accused some judges and media of being biased with regards to Musharraf's trial.

The former military ruler, Musharraf, has not yet appeared in any hearing of the special court formed to try him on charges of high treason for declaring a state of emergency in Pakistan on November 3, 2007.

He is under treatment in Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) after developing heart problems while on his way to the court on January 2.

California wildfire dies down as police hold 3 in custody

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

Santa Ana winds that fanned a campfire into a wildfire that destroyed five homes and threatened foothill neighborhoods east of Los Angeles relented Thursday afternoon, halting the blaze in its tracks, while police held three men in custody after they allegedly started the blaze.
The fire swept through 1,700 acres of brush in the San Gabriel Mountains early in the day but by nightfall it was no longer advancing and was 30 percent contained.
"The weather cooperated quite a bit today. We didn't get the wind ... that we thought," Los Angeles County fire Deputy Chief John Tripp said.
Authorities planned to reopen evacuated Glendora neighborhoods, allowing back some of the 2,000 people ordered to leave the area.
However, fire engines would remain to guard the area overnight, he added.
The National Weather Service said a red-flag warning of extreme fire danger would remain in effect into Friday evening because of low humidity and the chance of winds gusting to 30 mph in the foothills and canyons.
The wildfire, which erupted early Thursday, damaged 17 homes, garages, barns and other buildings, Tripp said.
At least 10 renters were left homeless when the fire destroyed rental units on the historic grounds of a retreat that once was the summer estate of the Singer sewing machine family. Statues of Jesus and Mary stood unharmed near the blackened ruins. However, the main, 1920s mansion was spared.
"It's really a miracle that our chapel, our main house is safe," owner Jeania Parayno said.
Alex Larsen, 50, rented a room at the estate. The musician had lived there for about four years.
"All my possessions are toast, burned toast," he told the Los Angeles Times.
Two firefighters had minor injuries and a woman trying to fight the blaze near her home suffered a minor burn, Tripp said.
Three men in their 20s, including a homeless man, were arrested on suspicion of recklessly starting the blaze by tossing paper into a campfire in the Angeles National Forest, just north of Glendora.
Those arrested were Clifford E. Henry Jr., 22, of Glendora; Jonathan C. Jarrell, 23, of Irwindale; and Steven R. Aguirre, 21, a homeless man from Los Angeles, MyFoxLA.com reported, citing Glendora police. They were each being held in lieu of $20,000 bond Thursday evening.
Glendora Chief Tim Staab said the men were trying to keep warm and the wildfire appears to have been an accident.
"One was very remorseful for starting this fire," he said.
The men could face either state or federal charges, depending on whether the campfire was on federal forest land, he added.
The Angeles National Forest was under "very high" fire danger restrictions, which bar campfires anywhere except in fire rings in designated campgrounds.
There are no designated campgrounds in the area where the fire began, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman L'Tanga Watson said.
The mountains rise thousands of feet above dense subdivisions crammed up against the scenic foothills. Large, expensive homes stand atop brush-choked canyons that offer sweeping views of the suburbs east of Los Angeles.
Whipped by Santa Ana winds, the fire quickly spread into neighborhoods where residents were awakened before dawn and ordered to leave.
Jennifer Riedel in Azusa was getting her children, ages 5 and 7, ready to evacuate.
"They're a little nervous, but I'm keeping calm for them," she said. "I've been loading the car up with important papers and getting the kids dressed. We'll just take some essentials and get going if we have to."
However, other homeowners choses to stay, despite firefighters' orders to get out. Some wore masks against the ash and smoke as they wet down their properties with garden hoses.
The last catastrophic fire in the San Gabriel Mountains broke out in 2009 and burned for months, blackening 250 square miles, killing two firefighters and destroying more than 200 structures, including 89 homes.
The flames could have abundant fuel to consume. Vegetation above Glendora had not burned since a 1968 fire that was followed by disastrous flooding in 1969.
Many homes are nestled in rugged canyons and ridges that made access difficult.
Glendora police went door to door ordering residents of the upscale city of 50,000 to leave. Citrus College and several other schools canceled classes.
More than 700 firefighters were on the scene, along with 70 engines and a fleet of helicopters and air tankers dropping water and retardant.
The smoke was visible from space in satellite photos. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory and urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in directly affected areas.
About 70 miles to the northwest, another fire burned one acre of tinder-dry chaparral near Pyramid Lake before it was contained. Authorities say the blaze began in a mobile home. No injuries were reported.
California is in a historically dry period, and winter has offered no relief.
Large parts of Southern California have been buffeted all week by the region's notorious Santa Ana winds, which have contributed to some of the region's worst wildfires.
The winds form as the cold inland air flows toward Southern California, then speeds up and warms as it descends in a rush toward the coast. Some of the most extreme gusts reported by the weather service topped 70 mph.
The Santa Anas typically begin in the fall and last through winter into spring. The winds also raise temperatures to summerlike levels. Many areas have enjoyed temperatures well into the 80s.

Mukhtar Mai incident inspires New York opera

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

NEW YORK: To those who complain that opera is an elitist indulgence served up to snobs in dinner jackets, New York´s latest world premiere may come as something of a shock.

Inspired by the horrific gang rape of illiterate Pakistani woman Mukhtar Mai on orders of a village council, "Thumbprint" is a $150,000 production currently having an eight-night run in a basement theater in Manhattan.

One of the most infamous sex crimes against women in South Asia, Mai´s 2002 rape, survival and metamorphosis into an international rights icon is as far removed from opera-house pomp as possible. It may have earned a less-than-glowing review from The New York Times -- "muted," "not quite enough" -- but the score is an alluring blend of South Asian and Western music, and the production starkly innovative.

With a simple backcloth doubling up as a film projection screen, a few chairs and charpoys, the simple but powerful staging evokes the heat, the dust and the traditions of a Pakistani village.

Mai, now in her 40s, was raped to avenge her 12-year-old brother´s alleged impropriety with a woman from a rival clan.Six men were sentenced to death for her rape in a landmark ruling. But five were later acquitted and the main culprit had his sentence reduced to life imprisonment: facts the opera omits.

Mai´s story has fresh resonance since the brutal gang rape of a student on a New Delhi bus and her death a little over a year ago sparked international outrage about the levels of violence against women in India."It´s inspiring," said the opera´s Indian-American composer Kamala Sankaram, who also sings the lead role.

"This is a person who was completely illiterate and knew nothing of her rights and the laws of her country and yet she had the courage to step out," she told AFP.

There is no staged recreation of the rape, which is instead portrayed by muffled shrieks of terror interspersed with a knife slashing open bags of sand.

Sankaram worked to recreate Mai´s world by combining Hindustani music, Western composition, qawwali and Bollywood."I am a sitar player as well as being a Western musician so I wanted to bring in elements of traditional culture but still keep it something acceptable to Western listeners," she said.

Pakistan may be thousands of miles from New York but playwright and novelist Susan Yankowitz, who wrote the libretto, says the opera is about courage and universal vulnerability of women.

"The main question that is repeated throughout the opera is where did you find your courage... In a dry season, someone must be the first drop of rain," Yankowitz told AFP.

"The courage is to be the first drop of rain and that´s what I hope people will take away from it and inspire people to take some action they would otherwise not have the courage to do."

Compared to the majesty of New York´s Metropolitan Opera House a couple of miles up the road, "Thumbprint" is a tiny production with a six-person chamber orchestra and cast of just six singers.Shown as part of a small chamber music opera festival in its second year, tickets cost just $25 for the 90-minute production, which organizers hope will eventually tour India and Pakistan.

Unable to find a suitable sarangi player, Sankaram´s score has been written for flute, violin, viola, piano (with harmonium on the side), and a brilliant double bass and percussionist.

Most of the singers perform more than one part and the Baruch Performing Arts Center seats just 170 people. The run ends Saturday, but it´s unclear what Mai makes of it all.

Since the attack, she has set up a school for girls and won prominence in the West for her outspoken stance on the oppression of women.Manu Narayan, the Broadway star who has won rave reviews as an all-too-realistic unrepentant rapist, welcomed the opera and the Prototype opera festival as a vital platform for young composers.Bankruptcy forced New York City Opera to close last year.

Some artists and musicians complain that original culture in New York City is being priced out of the metropolis by big business."I think the music´s spectacular," Narayan told AFP.

"This festival is so wonderful. It really creates a very focused platform for new works and great stories that need to be told, and the story of Mukhtar Mai is one of the prime examples." (AFP)

Spate of Iraq bombings kill 39

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

BAGHDAD: Attacks in and north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, including a suicide bombing at a funeral and seven car bombs, killed at least 39 people on Wednesday, officials said.

The suicide attack hit the funeral of an anti-Al-Qaeda militiaman in restive Diyala province while the car bombs targeted civilians in and around the capital, according to security and medical officials. Dozens more were wounded in the violence, which was mostly concentrated in Baghdad.

At least seven car bombs went off minutes apart in majority-Shia or confessionally-mixed neighbourhoods across the capital, killing 23 people, officials said.

A suicide bomb targeting the funeral of an anti-Qaeda militiaman in Buhruz, north of Baghdad, meanwhile killed 16 more people.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bloodshed, but Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda frequently carry out coordinated attacks on civilians and often target anti-Al-Qaeda militiamen, whom they regard as traitors.

Google gets in game of Internet age storytelling

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

SAN FRANCISCO: The Google lab behind augmented reality game "Ingress" is teaming with HarperCollins Publishers and top author James Frey for an Internet age adventure in storytelling.

Niantic Labs announced Wednesday that it will create a mobile augmented reality game as part of an "Endgame" multimedia project meshing together digital novellas, YouTube videos, social media and search results.

Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the film rights.

The project centers on a trilogy by authors James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton. The first book, "Endgame: The Calling," will be published on October 7, according to HarperCollins.

"This is a spectacular story that embodies the future of publishing -- great content, interactivity and a multimedia experience," HarperCollins chief executive Brian Murray said in a statement.

Clues and riddles for solving interactive puzzles will be sprinkled throughout each Endgame book. Gold will be on display in a bulletproof glass case, the key to which can be found by solving the puzzle in the first book in the series, according to HarperCollins.

Claiming of the prize will be streamed live at Google-owned online video venue YouTube.

Endgame will be released simultaneously around the world in more than 30 languages, according to HarperCollins.

"We're doing something really amazing, really new, something readers are going to love," Frey said.

"The whole project is a dream come true, and as far as I'm concerned, October can't come soon enough."

Frey is writing the script for the first film, which will be produced by Temple Hill's Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, producers behind the Twilight Saga series of films.

"Endgame is an innovative omni-platform endeavor, and we at 20th Century Fox are thrilled and committed to work with HarperCollins, and Google Niantic Labs to bring James Frey's groundbreaking franchise to audiences around the world," said 20th Century Fox production president Emma Watts.

Niantic Labs is developing a location-based, augmented reality game that marries video games and the physical world. The game is expected to launch for play on Android and Apple-powered mobile devices late this year.

Six Endgame novellas will be available exclusively at the Google Play store as e-books.

"James has a great vision for telling stories in an integrated way across books, film, social media and mobile games," said Niantic Labs vice president of product John Hanke.

"We are delighted to bring our technology and expertise to bear on a project that is helping to define the future of entertainment."

Why Your Insurance Premiums Just Went Up (and What to Do About It)

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

Have you noticed that your insurance premiums are going up lately? Going up a lot?

You're not alone. According to anew report out from Bankrate.com, more than one-third of U.S. consumers say their insurance costs grew in 2012. In a few cases, this was because people had more things to insure -- they bought a new house, or a second car, or perhaps brought home a new baby, who needed some health insurance. But in the majority of cases -- 62 percent -- consumers say they're paying more simply because their insurance company is charging more.

Insurance professionals estimate the average homeowner's insurance premium has risen 10 percent per year every year since 2008.

What's Behind the Hikes

But is this a case of insurers price-gouging their customers? Or are there legitimate reasons for the rising rates? Actually, it's the latter.

Insurance Information Institute spokesman Michael Barry points out that between "Hurricane Irene, the Joplin tornado that was the single biggest insurance event in Missouri history, and widespread winter storms, tornadoes and flooding in interior states like Minnesota," the past decade has been one of the costliest in terms of natural disasters in U.S. history. And because insurance companies bear a large portion of that cost, it only makes sense that they might need to charge higher premiums to pay for all the claims they've been receiving.

Health care costs, too, are on the rise -- leading to higher premiums for that flavor of insurance as well. Consumer Federation of America insurance director J. Robert Hunter blames health insurance for much of the inflation indicated in the Bankrate survey.

But the real reason is bigger than either of these explanations.

The Float is Sinking

On one hand, yes, insurance companies of all stripes are spending more to satisfy customer claims. The increased costs these companies face drive them to raise their rates to recoup their expenditures. But that's only half of the problem.
To understand the other half, you need to understand how insurance companies work -- how they make their money. This basically consists of three steps:

Step 1 is, of course, to collect premiums.

Step 2 is to invest the money from those premiums until it comes time to pay out on a claim. An insurance company doesn't just put the money under a mattress after cashing your premium check. Rather, it takes this money -- called "float" in industry parlance -- and invests it in the corporate bond market, in federal savings bonds, and in the stock market.

Here's where the problem begins: The interest rates insurers have been getting on their bond investments have been frightfully low these past few years. Similarly, the stock market is in a funk. It's been doing well these past few weeks, true. But the bigger picture shows that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, still hasn't regained its highs of October 2007. That means that for more than five straight years, insurers haven't earned anything on their stock holdings.

And this brings us to Step 3, which is the real problem. Insurance companies were counting on profits from the stock market (and the interest on those bonds) to help cover their costs when it finally came time to pay out cash to satisfy insurance claims. Those profits simply haven't materialized, and as a result, insurers need to find money somewhere else in order to make good on insurance claims from their customers.

Guess where they found it?

That's right. They found it in your wallet. In order to make up the difference between the money they thought they would have, and the amount they actually wound up with, insurers are raising prices. It's really the only solution for them -- and even then, insurance professionals say that there's been little or no profit for insurance companies in homeowners insurance since about 2008.

What Can You Do?

Of course, that's small consolation for those of us footing the bill for the insurers' miscalculation. So what's the solution?

Bankrate offers several ideas for cutting costs, ranging from raising the deductible on your homeowners and auto insurance policies, to dropping collision coverage on an old car, to buying home and auto insurance from the same company. (When you "bundle," insurers will often give you a discount.)

Probably the best thing you can do to mitigate rising insurance costs, though, is shop around for a better deal. Bankrate notes that in some cases, an hour spent on the phone calling insurers and comparing rates can save you in excess of $200 a year. Even if you don't have an hour to spare, though, you can still shop around by asking an insurance broker to do the comparisons for you.

It could "save you 15 percent or more on your car insurance," as one famous lizard famously promised. With any luck, it could even get you back to the prices you were paying before the lizard -- and everyone else -- began raising their rates.

Indian Army chief admits to killing of 10 Pak soldiers

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

NEW DELHI: The Indian Army chief, General Bikram Singh, on Monday admitted the killing of 10 Pakistan Army soldiers as he levelled allegations of ceasefire violations on Pakistani troops.

“Let me assure you that action has been taken. I can invite the attention to the Geo TV report on December 23, which talked of their one officer and nine Jawans being killed with 12-13 being wounded. This has happened due to the firing of your soldiers on ground. They have done their bit,” he said addressing the annual Army Day press conference here.

In a warning to Pakistan, Gen Bikram Singh vowed to respond in equal measure if Pakistan broke any rules as he revealed that 10 Pakistani soldiers had been killed in a recent military action.

He rejected the perception that the Indian military had not retaliated against the beheading of its soldiers by Pakistani troops last year.Gen Singh said it was virtually a “mini war at the local level” whenever a ceasefire violation took place at the Line of Control (LoC).

“The soldiers are doing a stupendous job. The local units are doing a good job. The soldiers have reacted well and they have reacted well as required,” he asserted.

When referred to the alleged repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan at the LoC, the Indian army chief said, “It depends, if rules are followed by our neighbours, we follow the rules. If rules are broken, obviously we cannot stick to the rules. Even we are going to break the rules.”

“We will pay Pakistan back in the same coin,” added the Indian Army chief. At the same time, he said that through retaliation, the “endeavour is not to escalate the situation into operational or strategic arena. It is to deal with the same measure if not more and give a befitting response in a professional manner at place where we are fired upon.”

Gen Singh was asked to comment on the notion among common people that though he had promised retaliation after the beheading of soldiers in the Mendhar sector, no action had so far been taken.

He also noted that the frequency of ceasefire violations had decreased ever since the meeting between the Director General Military Operations of both the countries was held in December last.

“Ceasefire violations have continued. Since the agreement on ceasefire violation there has been a reduction in them. After that these ceasefire violations have been for infiltration bids,” said General Singh.

“Our forces respect the laws of Geneva Convention. We do act. Our forces retaliate in a professional way,” he added. He further said that there was zero tolerance towards human rights violations.

When asked to comment on AAP leader Prashant Bhushan’s statement to withdraw troops from J&K, the army chief refused to make a statement, saying as the head of the army, he never commented on politics.

General Singh further voiced his opposition against tampering with AFSPA in J&K and added that army must stay in the state.Responding to the Indian army chief’s statement regarding ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC, Pakistan military spokesman said that it was contrary to the facts on the ground.

According to an ISPR press release, Pakistan Army respects the ceasefire agreement in letter and spirit. After the meeting between the Director Generals Military Operations on December 24 last, the situation along LoC had improved considerably. Such accusation and provocative statements were regrettable and counterproductive, the spokesman added.

Pakistani, Bangali arrested at London airport for alleged terror offences in Syria

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

British counter-terror police arrested two men on Monday at London’s Heathrow Airport on suspicion of terrorism offences linked to Syria, police said.

The men, both aged 21 and from Birmingham, central England, were held after arriving back in Britain on a flight from Istanbul in Turkey, West Midlands Police said.

According to sources one of the men is of Pakistani origin and the other is of Bangladeshi descent.

Pakistani man belongs to Faisalabad city of Punjab provience.

They are believed to have travelled to Syria in May 2013, police said.

British police have over the past three years arrested a number of people who have travelled to Syria over concerns that they are fighting with jihadi groups.

Unarmed officers from the force’s counter-terrorism unit detained the two men on Monday as they disembarked from their plane and they are now being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands area, which includes Birmingham.

Police played down any immediate terror threat.

“We took action this afternoon in order to ensure we can properly understand what activities these men have been engaged in whilst in Syria — not because they posed any imminent threat to the public,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell, head of the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Monday that “hundreds” of Britons were believed to have gone to fight in Syria but said security forces were doing their best to monitor the situation.

In November British prosecutors dropped a case against a doctor accused of kidnapping a British photographer and his Dutch colleague in Syria.

Turkey’s government, which is fiercely opposed to al-Assad, has come under fire for allegedly turning a blind eye to militants and weapons crossing the country’s long border into Syria. The interior ministry report, published in several Turkish newspapers on Wednesday, said about 500 Turkish citizens had joined the ranks of the Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). “Some have received training in Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the report says, according to press accounts.

According to extracts from a study by British defense consultancy IHS Jane’s published in the Daily Telegraph, some 100,000 militants are operating in Syria.

The militants have split into some 1,000 brands since the crisis began in Syria, according to the study, which is based on intelligence estimates and interviews with militants.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly conflict since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey – are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

Birmingham fake money: Four jailed for £1.3m counterfeit scam

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

Four men have been jailed for making more than £1.3m worth of counterfeit £10 notes.

Brothers Amrit and Prem Karra were each sentenced to seven years for using their printing business in Hockley, Birmingham, to produce the forgeries.
Rajiv Kumar and Yash Mahey were jailed for four years at Birmingham Crown Court for counterfeiting money between September 2011 and February 2012.
The court was told £1.27m worth of fake notes had been recovered by police.
All four were found guilty of conspiring to counterfeit a currency note with the intention they or another would pass or tender it as genuine.
Prem Karra, 43, from Brookhouse Road, Walsall, ran Karra Design and Print on Summer Lane with his brother Amrit Paul Karra, 45, of Broadway North, Walsall.
The court heard along with Rajiv Kumar, 40, of Clarkes Lane, West Bromwich, and Yash Paul Mahey, 46, from Granbrook Road, Handsworth, they used computers and machinery to make "high-quality counterfeit notes".

The men worked throughout the night to "avoid detection", the court was told.
The forgeries were found at businesses as far away as Kent and south Wales, during an investigation by the National Crime Agency.
It said the fakes, some of which had their own unique serial numbers, were still being discovered by banks and retailers.
'Professional forgers' The court was told the printing company was in financial trouble and the brothers had turned to counterfeiting to save it.
David Emanuel, defending Prem Karra, said: "The temptation of a cash injection of a job like this was too much.
"It was a very misguided attempt to save the business with a short-term cash injection."
Quentin Hunt, defending Rajiv Kumar, told the court others had been involved in the fraud.
"These four conspirators, you may infer, were by no means the only persons involved in the distribution and production of these counterfeit notes," he said.
Judge Richard Bond said the fact that some of the £10 notes were still in circulation showed how "sophisticated" the operation had been.
"If the notes were passed as part of ordinary day-to-day financial transactions they would go unnoticed unless someone examined them," he said.
In sentencing, he told the men: "You were all professional forgers with carefully prepared plates and machinery.
"The reason for your offending is quite simply greed. You were trying to make a large sum of money."
'Found and punished' The judge banned the Karra brothers from holding a company directorship for eight years.
Julian Harrison-Pike, whose firm Flaps is located near the printing company, said the brothers were well respected by those who knew them.
"Over the years we have known them I would never have expected it," he said.
"They were a nice couple of guys and the whole family was well thought of.
"I know they were very active in the Birmingham business community."
Richard Warner, the National Crime Agency's Birmingham branch commander, said: "These men ran a sophisticated operation that posed a significant threat to the UK economy at the time.
"By working closely with industry experts our officers stopped them causing more damage."
A Bank of England spokesperson said: "The bank works closely with the National Crime Agency in the fight against counterfeiting. We are grateful for their work in pursuing this case to a successful conclusion.
"Those individuals who engage in counterfeiting should know they will be found and punished for their crimes."

Several students injured, 2 critically, in New Mexico middle school shooting

Posted by Unknown  | No comments

Several students were injured, including two critically, Tuesday morning in a shooting at the Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, N.M., as children were being dropped off to start their day, authorities said.
The shooter is in custody and is believed to be a student at the school, Sabrina Morales, a spokeswoman from the Roswell Police Department said.
It is unclear what led to the shooting, but nurses treating a 14-year-old boy indicated that he was the shooter’s target. KLBK reported that the other student in critical condition is a 13-year-old girl. Both students were transferred to University Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
Lorena Beltran told the Albuquerque Journal her daughter, who attends the school, said a male student was shot in the face.
A student who witnessed the shooting says the shooter was a boy who she thought was being bullied. Eighth grader Odiee Carranza says it happened in the school gym. She says the boy shot the 14-year-old twice in the face, and shot the girl in the arm.
Carranza says the boy then fired a shot into the sky before dropping the gun. A teacher then grabbed him.
Roswell police say the school was placed on lockdown, and the suspected shooter was arrested. Age and other details on the suspect were not immediately released.
Police say the shooting happened at 8:11 a.m. local time Tuesday.
Sixth-grade student Anyssa Vegara said she was talking to a security guard when she heard a shot.
"I turned around, and all I saw was someone on the floor with their arm bleeding," Vegara told the Journal.
She said the security guard ran to assist the injured student, and school officials ordered all the students to their classrooms.
Eventually, she was able to text her mother, Monica Vegara.
"From the time hearing about it until the time she texted, it was a nightmare," Monica Vegara said.
Fawna Hendricks, whose son is a seventh-grader at Berrendo Middle School, told the newspaper she heard about the shooting on the radio. "Basically I jumped outta bed, threw on clothes, panicked," Hendricks said.
Employees who arrived early to work at United Drilling Inc., across the street from the school, heard no gunshots. They didn't know about the commotion until around 8 a.m., when their parking lot filled with police and rescue vehicles.
At the Roswell mall, parents waited anxiously for their children. Some held hands, while others hugged each other.
"Currently, the threat has been alleviated and this incident is being investigated," read a statement from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. "There are many resources and law enforcement officers on scene securing the area."
The Berrendo Middle School has classes for sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes. The school’s enrollment is about 200 students.
