Search intensifies for 2 missing South Carolina women, while police discover human skeletal remains
Posted by Unknown | No comments
Police searching for two women who recently vanished in South Carolina came upon a set of human skeletal remains near where a third woman disappeared three years ago.
The discovery came as a reward for missing 20-year-old Heather Elvis, of Myrtle Beach, was increased to $20,000. Authorities intensified their search for Elvis and another young woman -- both of whom disappeared from the same area within a week of each other. While scouring a heavily wooded area for Elvis on Saturday, authorities found "adult skeletal remains," said Lt. Peter Cestare of the Horry County Police Department. It is not yet known whether the bones, which have been there "for some time," are male or female, he said.
The bones were found about 25 miles from where 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel was last seen in 2009. Drexel, a high school junior from the Rochester area, went with friends and without her mother's permission to Myrtle Beach on April 23, 2009. Authorities have long said they suspect Drexel is dead, but exhaustive searches for the teenager have never turned up remains.
"They’ve been there for more than three years, but I can’t give you a timeline," Cestare said of the bones.
Elvis' father has teamed up with the Tilted Kilt corporate offices to increase the reward for information on his daughter, who was last heard from around 3 a.m. Dec. 18 after she went on a date, according to her family. Her car was found abandoned at a boat landing Dec. 19 in Horry County.
"She's a beautiful young lady," the woman's father, Terry Elvis, told FoxNews.com. "She’s a good-hearted girl . . . always helpful and active in her church activities. Everybody loved her."
"To not hear from her for more than 24 hours is way out of character," he said.
Horry County Police and volunteers have spent the last week looking for Heather Elvis, but have found no trace. Several companies have donated billboard advertising to put up pictures and information on Elvis.
Another young woman, 24-year-old Jamie Lynn Cross, was reported missing five days after Elvis. Cross was last seen leaving her Myrtle Beach home in her green Volkswagen around 5 p.m. on Dec. 23. There is no indication the two disappearances are related, according to authorities.
Elvis is described as being 5 foot, 1 inch tall and weighing about 118 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Judge extends deadline to keep Jahi McMath on life support
Posted by Unknown | No comments
With less than an hour before life support was due to be withdrawn, a judge in a California superior court extended a deadline to keep a 13-year-old on a ventilator as her family struggles to move her to a new facility.
The order, issued by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo, nullifies a deadline set for Monday that would have removed Jahi McMath from life support, extending the order until Jan. 7.
"In essence, the court orders the respondent (Oakland Children's Hospital) to maintain the 'status quo,'" Grillo's order said.
Earlier Monday, Jahi McMath's uncle, Omari Sealey, said the family had filed a new complaint in federal court requesting an injunction against Grillo's deadline set last week that would have allowed the hospital to remove Jahi from life support at 5 p.m. PST Monday.
Sealey claimed that Jahi, who was declared brain dead earlier this month following a tonsillectomy at the hospital, is showing signs of movement and that an unnamed pediatrician has visited her and claims she is not dead.
"Jahi is moving when her mother speaks to her, and when her mother touches her," Sealey said in his brief statement. He did not take questions from reporters.
The family has located a licensed facility in New York that will take her and has contracted with an ambulance company that will transfer her, Sealey said.
Doctors at Oakland Children's Hospital and an independent pediatric neurologist from Stanford University have concluded the girl is brain dead. The hospital has refused to perform a tracheotomy for breathing and insert a feeding tube, necessary procedures in order to transfer Jahi, saying it's unethical to perform surgery on a person legally declared dead.
On Sunday, the hospital said it had not heard from the New York, or any other, facility about a transfer.
"We need to be able to talk to the other facility to understand what it is they are capable of doing," Cynthia Chiarappa, a hospital spokeswoman, said. "This is not transferring an individual in a vegetative state, but a dead body."
The hospital also said it would need to confirm there is "lawful transportation" included in any plan to transfer Jahi, and written permission from the coroner.
The hospital's lawyer, Douglas Straus, said in a letter to Jahi's family on Sunday that the hospital has required three conditions to transfer Jahi, including assurance from the new facility.
"Discussion about performing medical procedures upon a dead body presents unusual and complicated questions. Until there is a definite commitment by a facility to accept Jahi's body upon specified terms, I don't think I can tackle those issues," the hospital's lawyer, Straus wrote.
Straus also wrote that the hospital needs to be presented with a "lawful transportation plan" and written approval from the Alameda County coroner to send the teen's body out of state.
With the clock ticking, the family has raised more than $22,000 through the fundraising website in the chance of a possible transfer.

Family of British surgeon found hanged in Syrian jail believes he was murdered
Posted by Unknown | No comments
As a British surgeon who died in a Syrian jail was eulogized at a London funeral by his brokenhearted brother as the “kindest and simplest man I’ve ever met,” English officials convened an inquest into the strange circumstances of the doctor's death.
Outside a service last week at London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park, Fatima Khan – Dr. Abbas Khan's mother – reportedly cried out in anguish and rebuffed supporters’ repeated attempts to assuage her heartrending grief, saying, “Nobody help me. I love my son. I am the loser. I’m the failure…I beg everybody. I touch everyone’s feet. Please give me my son.”
The Guardian of England reports that during the ceremony, Shahnawaz Khan – Khan’s brother – told mourners, “Last night, I sat down to undertake the morbid task of writing a eulogy for my brother. My brother, to us, was our star. His star shone on our family.”
Dr. Abbas Khan, a 32-year-old father of two young children, was captured in the Syrian city of Aleppo in November 2012 after he entered the war-torn nation from Turkey -- allegedly without a visa -- in order to work in a field hospital.
Syrian authorities reportedly informed the British government through a Czech official he died on December 16 while in government custody. They insist Khan committed suicide, while his family and the British government contend he was, “in effect, murdered.”
Meanwhile, a London coroner reportedly listened as officials said during an official inquest into Khan’s death on Friday that Syrian authorities claim Khan hanged himself before he was due in a Damascus terrorism court.
The Guardian reports Syrian officials claim Khan was served breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on December 16, and that his death was recorded upon their return to his cell around 9 a.m., or shortly before he was to be produced in court.
“It was their opinion he had committed suicide, although the motivation for this was not apparent to them,” Detective Chief Inspector Grant Mallon reportedly said during the inquest, adding Syrian authorities say they thereafter determined the cause of Khan's death to be asphyxiation by hanging, and that they found, “no traces of violence, forced resistance or torture on the body.”
The Guardian reports the inquest was adjourned after a single day without an official cause of death logged by British authorities.
Officials there are now reportedly awaiting the results of a toxicology test on Khan.
Also, Khan’s family has reportedly revealed that shortly before his death, the doctor had penned a letter to them in which he expressed optimism concerning what he believed would be his impending release, just in time for Christmas with his wife and children, ages 6 and 7.
During Shanawaz Khan’s eulogy of his brother, he called him, “the kindest and simplest man I’ve ever met,” and referred to not only, “the evil that has taken him from us so cruelly,” but also resulted in, “one of the most difficult times we have ever seen.”
Four American service members freed from Libyan custody
Posted by Unknown | No comments
Four U.S. military personnel were taken into custody Friday by Libyan authorities and held for several hours before being released Saturday morning, U.S. officials told NBC News.
<br>
Jen
Psaki, a spokeswoman for the State Department, confirmed that the four
Americans were taken into "Libyan government custody" Friday. The circumstances remained unclear Saturday, but U.S. officials told NBC News that the Americans were were conducting a standard review of evacuation routes when they were involved in an "incident" of some kind at a security checkpoint.
The service members were held at the Interior Ministry — not by police or security forces — before they were eventually released, a U.S. official said Saturday.
Psaki said in a statement the State Department was still trying to “ascertain the facts of the incident.”
“We value our relationship with the new Libya,” she said. “We have a strategic partnership based on shared interests and our strong support for Libya's historic democratic transition.”
The New York Times, citing U.S. officials, reported that the four Americans were assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, the capital. It said they appeared to have been detained southwest of Sabratha, about 40 miles from Tripoli.
Reuters reported that Libyan officials said the Americans were detained when part of their convoy failed to stop at a checkpoint and was found to be carrying weapons.
A White House official said on Saturday that President Barack Obama, who was vacationing in Hawaii, has been updated on the issue by the National Security Council staff.

'Cop Killer' Suspect Connected to Another Bank Robbery
Posted by Unknown | No comments
As authorities continue a nationwide manhunt for a suspected cop killer,
law enforcement officials have revealed that the suspected killer and
bank robber had attempted a previous bank robbery just before the deadly
attack.
Just hours before the suspect robbed a bank and shot two police officers
in Tupelo, Miss., authorities say he attempted another robbery in
Atlanta, nearly 300 miles away. According to officials, after trying to
unsuccessfully rob a Bank of America with a gun, the suspect then walked
outside and mugged a person at the ATM.
FBI Special Agent Steve Emmett told reporters the security camera images
of the suspect in Atlanta were similar to those in Tupelo.
"Same individual, same day, it's a violent robbery," said Emmett.
On Dec. 23 Officer Gale Stauffer and a second officer were shot when
they confronted the alleged robbers at a railroad crossing as they made
their escape. Stauffer died of his injuries and the other officer
remains in the hospital in serious condition.
The FBI and local police have launched a nationwide dragnet to find
unknown suspects, and according to ABC News affiliate station WAPT a
reward of $200,000 has been offered
to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Police are not even sure how many suspects they're looking for, and are
hoping that someone saw something in the bloody aftermath of that bank
robbery -- or took a cellphone photo -- something that just might help
investigators.
Earlier this week residents in Tupelo, Miss., held a candlelight vigil for Officer Gale Stauffer.
Flags were lowered to half-staff in memory of officer Stauffer, an army
veteran of the Iraq War, and father of two young children.
"I'm at peace knowing Gale died doing what he loved," said his wife Beth Stauffer.
A funeral service for Stauffer took place on Friday. Stauffer's mother,
Debbie Brangenberg, acknowledged those who came to remember her son.
"The overwhelming love and support that this community has given us has helped us make it through," she said.
Vigil Held as Manhunt Goes Nationwide
Stauffer was a combat veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and
he had served with the Tupelo Police Department for eight years,
according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
As the officers approached suspects in a vehicle, which was stuck in
traffic at a railroad crossing, at least one of the suspects opened fire
at close range, according to an account posted online at the Officer
Down Memorial Page.
After reviewing bank surveillance video from the robbery of a
BancorpSouth bank in Tupelo, authorities are looking for a thin,
possibly African-American man with a light complexion, standing between
5-feet-9 and 6-feet tall, according to the Mississippi Department of
Public Safety.
The suspect seen in the surveillance video was wearing khaki or
cargo-style pants, white Converse tennis shoes, a long-sleeved jacket
and a blue ski mask, the state public safety department said. A
charcoal-colored, medium-size sedan might have been used as a getaway
car.
Road outside Bilawal House partially opened; PTI-PPP workers clash averted
Posted by Unknown | No comments
KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) champions and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) cohorts were on a collision course on Saturday evening when a protest against encroachments almost turned into a battering ram ready to demolish a concrete wall built around Bilawal House for ‘added security’.
A large contingent of riot police were deployed outside Bilawal House after PTI said it would launch a campaign to bring down the security wall.
Policemen and paramilitary troops surrounded Bilawal House to fend off a possible clash between workers of both the parties.
Earlier, hundreds of PTI and PPP workers started showing up outside Bilawal House this evening.
To reduce tensions, authorities opened one side of the road that had been blocked for years for security reasons.
"We have opened one side of the road for normal use and set up CCTV cameras for security purposes. There is a large contingent of police to avert any clash," a police official said.
The authorities opened the road after Geo News aired PTI’s announcement that it aimed to demolish the wall outside Bilawal House, which the party claimed hampered normal life and traffic.
The PTI said it would organize a protest near Bilawal House and demolish the fortification built when PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari was the president of Pakistan.
PPP leader Najmi Alam warned of clashes if PTI workers tried to tumble the wall forcibly.
"Bilawal House is a sentimental memorial of our martyred leader Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and any attempt to create problems or play politics with it will not be tolerated," he said.
On the other hand, PTI leader Arif Alvi claimed the wall had been built illegally and Sindh High Court recently issued orders that it be torn down.
"We are just following court orders," he said.
Alvi argued that security arrangements outside Bilawal House were illegal and a source of nuisance for local residents.
"It's not politics, it's about citizen's rights. The protest will continue Sunday and ultimately this wall will be knocked down," he said.
PML-N is based on ‘Neelaam Ghar’: Imran
Posted by Unknown | No comments
LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan Saturday severely criticizing Pakistan Muslim League-N, said the party appears to be based on a famous TV show of the past - ‘Neelam Ghar’.
“Muslim League-N bought politicians and then engaged into ‘Changa Manga politics’,” Imran Khan lashed out, saying the politicians with assets in foreign countries are not sincere to their homeland.
He said neither he nor his children owned any assets abroad and if people with dual nationality are ineligible to hold a public office, then those with assets in other countries should also be put into the same category.
Imran Khan said the steps being taken by the government indicate that the present regime is not going to stay for long.
He reiterated his complaint that the Election Commission and judiciary did not play their due role in the holding of general elections in the country.
The PTI chief said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says the country is being pushed against the wall by Nato supply blockade. “If halting the Nato supply line is so wrong, then what is the justification of passing resolutions in favor of it in the parliament,” he asked.
He clarified that he is not against the construction of Kala Bagh Dam. However, he added, that the Punjab should also play a responsible role.

PIA flight finally arrives at Lahore Airport after 55 hours
Posted by Unknown | No comments
LONDON: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-758 finally arrived at Allama Iqbal International Airport after 55 hours delay, Geo News reported.
Over 300 passengers were stranded in London for 55 hours.
Our correspondent says the flight was supposed to take off on Tuesday night at 8:00 pm but at the last minute the passengers were told that the plane had developed a problem and that the PIA could not run any risk with the flight.
It took the local PIA management 4 hours to get the passengers in the hotels near Heathrow and those living in London went to their homes.
The passengers included mainly families, planning to spend Christmas and New Year holidays with their dear ones in Pakistan but their plans were effectively ruined.
PIA spokesperson Mashhood Tajwar told the correspondent that the flight was delayed due to a “software issue related to control panel. Due to Christmas holidays, it was difficult to obtain local services and logistics support in London. Engineers along with parts to be replaced were sent from Pakistan. Due to shortage of fleet, no spare aircraft was available as rescue flight.”
The passengers have expressed severe disappointment on the management of national airlines.

Sign-Up Period Extended Again for Health Plan
Posted by Unknown | No comments
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration said Tuesday that it would provide
more time for people to complete their applications for health
insurance if they could show that they missed the deadline because of
problems with the federal health care website.
The move was the latest in a series of deadline changes, exemptions and
clarifications that have confused insurers and many Americans and opened
the administration to increasing criticism from Republicans who have
opposed the Affordable Care Act from the start and have repeatedly tried
to overturn it.
It was not clear on Tuesday how many people would be affected, or how
consumers would prove that website errors had prevented them from
signing up by the deadline on Tuesday night.
The announcement itself was vague, saying only that if website problems
had prevented any consumers from enrolling, they might qualify for what
the government has called “a special enrollment period.” The
administration did not say how long that would last. Nor did it define
what website errors might be involved.
Republicans said the announcement — coming a day after the federal
website recorded more than two million visits — showed that President
Obama was desperate to increase enrollment, widely seen as a measure of
the success of the health care law.
For their part, administration officials said the move was a
common-sense response to heavy traffic on the website, which they cited
as evidence of a huge need for more affordable insurance. Some 48
million Americans are uninsured. Many could qualify for subsidized
coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Tara McGuinness, a White House spokeswoman, said the administration was
not providing “a blanket extension,” but was offering to provide
“assistance to individuals on a case-by-case basis.”
And Kurt DelBene, the new troubleshooter for the site, said it was
performing well. “With the highest volumes we have seen to date,
response time is fast, and the error rate is low,” he said.
The move did not mollify insurers who have grown concerned as new
problems have erupted since the rollout on Oct. 1 and are worried about
how they will be able to provide coverage for everyone who wants it by
Jan. 1, when that coverage is supposed to go into effect.
“The goal posts keep moving,” William G. Schiffbauer, a lawyer who
represents insurance companies, said Tuesday evening. “That raises
questions about whether insurers can collect premiums in a timely manner
to pay claims from doctors and hospitals.”
“The latest step creates confusion for consumers and insurers,” he added.
Insurers said that Tuesday’s action, combined with several recent
unexpected shifts in federal rules and policy, made it harder for them
to predict the number and characteristics of new subscribers. That, in
turn, makes it harder for them to predict their costs and complicates
efforts to set prices for their products.
In general, insurance companies say they need substantial numbers of
healthy people to balance the financial risks of covering older
Americans who require more medical care.
The open enrollment period continues to March 31. People who select
health plans on the federal exchange starting Wednesday and continuing
through Jan. 15 will generally be entitled to coverage that takes effect
on Feb. 1, provided they pay their share of the first month’s premium
before then.
The new offer to consumers who have had trouble with the website
followed the last-minute surge of interest among people seeking
coverage, and the administration hailed what it described as “amazing
interest” in new health insurance options.
The original deadline for coverage starting Jan. 1 was Dec. 15. On Nov.
22, the deadline was extended to Dec. 23. On Monday, the White House
provided a 24-hour grace period, to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday.
Then on Tuesday, in a bid to ensure coverage for all who want it, the
administration provided details of the “special enrollment period” for
some people — but not all — who miss the deadline.
“If you weren’t able to enroll in an insurance plan by Dec. 23 because
of problems you had using HealthCare.gov, you still may be able to get
coverage that starts Jan. 1,” the administration told visitors to the
website in a message
posted on the health insurance blog at HealthCare.gov. The message also
highlighted the assistance available to shoppers.
“Couldn’t enroll by December 23?” it said. “We can still help you get covered.”
Mother has Christmas wishes for family fulfilled 2 years after death
Posted by Unknown | No comments
Brenda Schmitz, mother of four boys and wife to a loving husband, lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2011. But her remarkable spirit lives on this Christmas.
Before she passed, she wrote a letter and gave it to a friend, to be sent in to Des Moines radio station KSTZ once Schmitz's husband David found love again.
KSTZ has been granting Christmas wishes for listeners for more than two decades. But this year's wish brought the entire station to tears, after Brenda's letter was read over the air by host Colleen Kelly with David in the studio.
His wife asked the station to grant three wishes: One for his new love, another for her husband's new family and another for the nurses and doctors who took such good care of her at Mercy Medical Center.
Brenda said she wanted the new woman in her boys' lives to be pampered for a day at a local spa, because "she deserves it, being a step-mother to all those boys, and especially giving little Max a mother's love that only she can give."
Brenda's second wish was for the family to receive a "magical trip" to make new memories and her third wish was for the Mercy Medical Center cancer unit to receive a night out full of food and drink "for all they do every day for the cancer patients they encounter."
Brenda added in her letter, "Thank you. I love you, whoever you are."
True to the season, KSTZ made Brenda's wishes come true, with a little help from their sponsors. David, his fiancé, Jayne Abraham, and their six kids (David's four boys, as well as the two of Jayne's own) are going to Walt Disney World sometime in the near future.

Cricket: Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 113 runs in third ODI
Posted by Unknown | No comments
SHARJAH: Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 113 runs in the third one-day international at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday to lead the series 2-1.
Earlier, batting first Pakistan set a 327-run target, chasing which Sri Lanka collapsed at 213 runs.
Mohammad Hafeez hit his second century of the series and opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad made 81 as Pakistan scored 326-5 against Sri Lanka.
Hafeez, who scored a century at the same venue in the series opener, made Sri Lanka pay heavily for dropping him on 26. He went on to a career-best unbeaten 140 off 136 balls with 11 fours and three sixes.
Shehzad shared a 160-run second wicket stand off 167 balls with Hafeez before he was run out in the 31st over after hitting six fours and two sixes.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq scored a brisk 40 off 26 balls as Sri Lanka conceded 105 in the last 10 overs through some wayward bowling after captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and chose to field.
Seamer Nuwan Kulasekara got the early breakthrough when he hit left-handed opening batsman Sharjeel Khan's offstump in the third over.
Hafeez carefully built up the innings with Shehzad before Lasith Malinga dropped Hafeez at long on off legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna.
Sri Lanka hit back briefly in the second batting powerplay when Shehzad was smartly run out by Malinga off his followthrough but Misbah played a little cameo by adding 75 runs off 51 balls for the third wicket stand.
Hafeez, who consumed 69 balls to complete his half century, raised the scoring tempo and completed his eighth ODI century off 119 balls when he hit Malinga through cover for two runs and then hit boundaries off the fast bowler's next three deliveries.
Misbah holed out in the deep off Thisara Perera (2-58) and Shahid Afridi (2) was clean bowled by Malinga before Umar Akmal (23 not out) hit two sixes and a four to set up a strong total for Sri Lanka.
Fast bowler Umar Gul recovered from knee surgery and returned to international cricket after nine months after last playing against South Africa in March.
Gul joined the Pakistan team on Saturday after proving his fitness and form to the selectors in a domestic four-day first class match by taking 11 wickets.
Sri Lanka named the same side that successfully chased down 285 on Friday to level the series 1-1. (AP)
Imran Khan flogs the government for failing to rein in inflation
Posted by Unknown | No comments
LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, says his party will very soon bring forth a 9-point agenda against inflation, Geo News reported.
“I want to warn the masses to brace for further hike in prices as what they are coping with right now is just tip of the iceberg”, said he addressing a rally here on Sunday.
The PTI Sunday staged a protest rally against unrestrained inflation, which saw a huge participation.
Khan turned up the heat on the government for turning a blind eye to the masses, whose stoves were lying cold owing to their continually ebbing affordability.
“People should not vote for those politicians who don’t keep their money in Pakistan. How can we trust those who don’t trust Pakistan with their wealth? Neither can they be sincere to Pakistan nor can they look US in the eyes”, said he.
The PTI chief also came down hard on the financial managers of the country for making a complete mess of the economy.
"Our government would not print banknotes to run the economy of the country like others did. It only adds to inflation, which has gone through the roof", he said.
Khan said that revenue worth Rs300 billion could be collected by bringing 3 million defaulters under the tax net.
Speaking on the US drone strikes, he reiterated that they were not in the favour of Pakistan at all.
“We do not want war with the US. We only want to convince the superpower that drone attacks are not helping the situation. Washington will not be able to achieve the desired results with such attacks. So far, they have proven to be counterproductive for both Pakistan and US”, said he.
Khan also urged the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to dig in his heels against the drone attacks.
"The premier should take a firm stand against America's repeated violation of Pakistan's sovereignty", Khan said.
During his address, he announced to stage anti-inflation rallies in Umer Kot and Rawalpindi on January 6 and 24 respectively.
